1st March in 18 Years Without a School Shooting

In an unexpected consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, last month marked the first March in 18 years which did not have a school shooting occur, here, in the U.S.

According to data released Tuesday by the National School Safety Center, there has been at least one school shooting in the U.S. every March since 2002.

While there were four incidents involving firearms before schools began shutting down in March, none fit the definition of a school shooting, according to the report.

The news comes as gun stores all over the country are reporting record sales, leading some to fear the school shooting epidemic may become worse once students return to classrooms.

“When this pandemic ends and we emerge from this physical distancing reality, the guns will remain,” says Igor Volsky, executive director of Guns Down America.  “Will there be increased mass shootings, school shootings, shootings at home, at work, at concerts?”
