Sunscreen is one of those things you know you have to slap on before heading to the beach, but are you really using it properly? Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kormeili says a recent American Academy of Dermatology study found that “only about a third of Americans are reapplying their sunscreen every two hours while outside. Since sunscreen wears off, incorrect usage leaves you unprotected and susceptible to skin cancer.” Her top tips: choose a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, water resistant, and has an SPF of 30 or higher, you should apply it 15 minutes before going outdoors, and note that most adults need to use about one ounce of sunscreen (one shot glass’ worth) to properly cover all skin that isn’t covered by clothing, and that harmful UV rays can go through clouds—so yes, you need sunscreen even on cloudy days.
